Satellite media provide connectivity for long-range. global WAN transmissions.
Transmission through satellite media works in two steps. First, a physical network transfers data signals to a satellite link, for transmission. Next, the satellite link transmits the signals to a physical network at the receiver end for data delivery. Usually, satellites use microwave signals to transmit data from a sender to a receiver.


In satellite communication, microwave signals are sent to the satellite in modulated
 microwave form. After the satellite receives the signals from the sender, it amplifies the
signals and sends the signals back to the earth. This communication is possible only if the
relative position of the satellite in the earth's orbit is constant, which means that the
position of the satellite is stationary compared to the position of the earth. To make this
possible, satellites known as geostationary satellite must be placed at a height of 36,000
km from the surface of the earth.

Latency is the time elapsed between the request for data and the receipt of a response.
High latency is a disadvantage of satellite transmission and makes it unsuitable for real-

Satellite Internet access is an example of direct, unbounded WAN transmission.
Depending on the service provider, satellite TV customers can choose to receive Internet
access through the same satellite dish that receives their TV signals.
